Welcome to our fourth update from the team. First of all, we apologize for the slightly longer than usual wait between Updates- the team has been heads down in the trenches working on today’s release, which took slightly longer than originally anticipated. So without further ado, let us get to the meat of today’s update: the release of CRYENGINE 3.6.5. While the full release notes can be found here, we want to highlight a few additions in a bit more detail:
CryDesigner Smoothing Groups
With the addition of Smoothing Groups, the CryDesigner takes a huge step forward as a legitimate content creation tool, giving you the power to create seamless models, directly in your level, inside Sandbox and at no additional cost!
To give you all a taste for the possibilities this offers, Crytek Artist Aleksander has started to recreate the Sandbox Team’s office space.
FBX Import Dialog
The new FBX Import Dialog is our first step towards true FBX support, something we have wanted to do for quite some time. In fact, the CRYENGINE Resource Compiler has had the ability to import static FBX meshes for a while now but this dialog gives users the front-end GUI and more control over what they want to import and how. Keep in mind, this is a first step and we plan on vastly improving the support and capabilities of this system as we go. So please give the tool a spin, and send us your feedback on it!
Game Content
In addition to some up-coming docs about basic inventory scripting, we've enhanced the currently shipped content to help users understand how inventories work in CRYENGINE and how to modify them to suit your game’s needs. We've also setup a few additional versions of the base SDK character with different colored outfits along with different equipment packs for AI, and then referenced those in the Archetype characters library so that you can see how you can setup different character types like friendlies, enemies, heavies, etc. As always, there is more to come in the future!
Mannequin Workshop
We've put together a great step-by-step workshop on COOP animations, which includes workshop files shipped with the SDK assets, tutorial article on the CRYENGINE docs as well as a new "MannequinObject" entity which can be used for in-game previewing of Mannequin animations.
Community Contributions
Today we want to give a shout-out to our friends at Entrada Interactive, who are currently working on the Multiplayer Survival game “Miscreated” (which has already been Greenlit on Steam). While they are busy porting their promising looking title to CRYENGINE 3.6, one of their artists took the time to share their PBS workflow with the community via Twitch. You can find all of Ryan’s videos showcasing different materials here
Please make sure to say thanks to Ryan and the "Miscreated" team.
That’s it for this time. As always, we cannot stress enough for crucial your feedback is for the team- please keep it coming so we can continue to shape CRYENGNE into a service that fulfills all your game development needs.
Until next time,
The CRYENGINE Team
