Audio is a key component of game design, providing unique technical and creative aspects for a non-linear medium. It is used in videogames to enhance environments, dramatize script and scenes, create a sense of realism, immerse the player into the game, and much more. Games like Far Cry, Crysis, and Ryse: Son of Rome would not be the gaming experiences they are without sound, so audio teams are highly important in creating a sonic identity for Crytek games.
Audio and sound design is an art as much as any other discipline. Industry expert Simon Pressey, who recently joined Crytek as Director of Audio, explains the importance of making a videogame a sonic experience as much as a visual one. “The development of the sound of a game, it’s like creating a world. Sound design is a highly creative field: a large portion of sound has to be created from scratch. A lot of that creation is combining existing sounds into a new one that’s more suitable. For example, a shield bashing sound can be created by combining sounds of roaring cougars. Audio is also about perspective, subtlety, and perception: it doesn’t matter where the sounds eventually come from, as long as they sell the experience.”
Anyone who’s ever taken satisfaction from building a city, raising a civilization or constructing a theme park within a game is liable to envy Jean-Baptiste Reynes’ day job.
President and co-founder of French firm ENODO, Jean-Baptiste is part of a team using CryENGINE 3 to create virtual environments that will often go on to become concrete realities. Along with fellow architect Arnaud Moioli, Jean-Baptiste saw a recurring frustration among clients that he felt could be alleviated by drawing inspiration from his passion for gaming.
Laléh Sahrai, responsible for Business Development at ENODO, explains: “The idea for the creation of the company came when Jean-Baptiste and Arnaud were experimenting throughout large urban planning or architectural projects, and they were feeling that their clients were having trouble communicating technical data around those projects. In parallel, they were hardcore gamers and noticing how much that technology had evolved and the amount of incredible things they could do in a videogame. So the whole idea came from trying to bond these two worlds to each other, and trying to use the videogame software for non-gaming purposes. That’s the whole idea.”
Earlier this year, Crytek launched a creative competition for students in association with the British Library and GameCity. The Off the Map challenge invites students from participating universities and colleges to draw inspiration from a selection of British Library maps and then turn that inspiration into interactive environments using our free CryENGINE 3 SDK.
Among the participants is Birmingham City University. One of their courses is Gamer Camp Studios, a vibrant development studio and Masters Degree course working closely with Sony Europe, creating prototypes for green-light with original Sony IP for iPad and PlayStation®3. The program focuses mostly on work-based and experiential learning: the students learn prerequisite skills at the beginning of their modules, and then use these skills in 'real' situations achieved in the studio environment.
BCU has two different teams working on Off the Map: OffTheMap GamerCamp 2 with their project StoneGate: SH1, and another team without title.
Crytek’s breathtaking new action-adventure game, Ryse: Son of Rome, was revealed to audiences at the E3 games expo in Los Angeles today as an Xbox One exclusive launch title. Featured during Microsoft’s E3 press conference, Ryse was shown off in a live gameplay demo and will also be playable by E3 attendees.
The game casts players as Marius Titus, a soldier in the Roman army who must embark on a brutal journey to defend the Empire’s honor and seek revenge for the murder of his family. Utilizing the power of Crytek’s CryENGINE®, the game promises to further enhance Crytek’s reputation for creating groundbreaking interactive experiences, and will also work in conjunction with Kinect for Xbox One to offer new possibilities for immersive gameplay.
