CryENGINE 3 Stereoscopic 3D - GDC 2010

CryENGINE 3 Stereoscopic 3D - GDC 2010

Inside Crytek - Felix Dodd

Introduction
Today sees another addition to our "Inside Crytek" series. This is a series of Q&A's with different members of the Crytek team, where they answer questions on all sorts of topics. These are not just ordinary interviews though. Once their intro has been posted you get the opportunity to ask them your questions!

This time we are speaking with Felix Dodd.

What do you do at Crytek?
I am a Level artist / Architectural specialist.

Why did you want to work in the games industry and how did you get started? Do you have any tips for people wanting to get started in the industry?
I decided to join when the tech was good enough – specifically interested in fully dynamic engine tech. to join the industry I recommend full immersion in everything you can, followed by lots of door-banging with examples to gain access.

Why Crytek?
First fully dynamic engine tech.

What are the best and worst parts of your job?
Best = people I work with.
Worst = general management typical for such a young industry (in both senses of the word).

What are you working on at the minute?
Crysis2 modular buildings (ARMS).

What types of games do you like, and what's your favorite game of all time?
FPS – all time favorite would be kingpin (most hours played).

What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work?
Sleeping.

It's up to you!
Now we've asked the questions, it's time for you to ask yours. Just go to this thread and post the questions you'd like to ask. Take advantage of the role the person does, and make sure to ask the right questions. Funny ones are always good, but nothing obscene. We'll pick out the best questions from the bunch and have the communities Q&A up once they're answered.

Crytek shows CryENGINE®3 in stereoscopic 3D

Crytek shows CryENGINE®3 in stereoscopic 3D

Latest all-in-one multi-platform development solution to be shown in stereoscopic 3D at GDC 2010

Frankfurt am Main (Germany), 1 March 2010 - Crytek GmbH (“Crytek”) is proud to announce the presentation of CryENGINE®3 in stereoscopic 3D (S-3D) at this year’s GDC expo in San Francisco (11–13 March). For the very first time, developers can experience the highly topical S-3D trend built with Crytek’s latest development solution.

One of the key features of the third-generation CryENGINE® is the “LiveCreate™” feature, which will also be showcased at GDC. CryENGINE®3 LiveCreate™ allows designers to work with a single editor, but see and play the results in real-time on the PC, PlayStation® 3 and Xbox 360™. With CryENGINE®3, scalability across multiple platforms is a revolutionary development to enable the creation of truly great-looking games – regardless of the target platform.

“After the successful introduction of CryENGINE®3 at last year’s GDC, we are really excited to show the latest version of our all-in-one game development solution this year in stereoscopic 3D. Over the past few years, S-3D technology has emerged as one of the key trends both in movies and games. With CryENGINE®3, developers will have the ability to create their content in 3D on all platforms. There are basically no longer any limits to a designer’s creativity. CryENGINE®3 features many innovations to accelerate development, cut production costs and ensure teams are able to maximize their own creativity without delays,” says Carl Jones, Director of Global Business Development CryENGINE.

CryENGINE®3 is the fastest and most robust high-end renderer in the world, with new features specifically designed for console platforms. Benchmark-setting graphical performance, near-photorealism rendering of indoor and wide-open outdoor environments as well as extraordinary real-time special effects are just some of the hallmarks of CryENGINE® technology. It was the underlying technology for Crytek’s critically acclaimed games Crysis® and Crysis® Warhead, and is used today not only throughout the video game industry and but also for many serious applications in fields from architecture, training and simulation to learning and development.

Crytek's Engine Business Team will be available during GDC for meetings and to discuss licensing details with prospective clients. In addition, Crytek will be hosting a series of public presentations at their booth, #1414. Crytek’s recruiters will also be at the show to answer questions about the company and accept resumes of interested applicants. Their booth is located at South Hall #2320 (Career Pavilion).

Outback 4thDnet SP Map

I (WarpSpeed) realized during the last weeks, that there're some Crysis related projects out there who are getting completed bit by bit. So I decided to start a project too. In this spirit I announce my new (after the egg-search map) map "OUTBACK" now and here.

Story: You're playing a soldier who is new in his team. So you've to demonstrate your ability.
Name: Outback 4thDnet
Gamemode: Singleplayer (SP)
Playtime: 30-45 minutes
Release: March/April 2010
Setting: Outback/Desert
ToD change: Yes
ToD range: 6:00am - 06:00pm
Missions: Yes
Intro/Outro: Maybe if I've enough time
Map size: 2048x2048

As I think most of us are tired from beach, jungle and paradise settings, I'll settle this map in Outback/Desert environment. Proper logic for an Australia-Fan.

My target is to complete building the map within 8 weeks (approximate). I'll work 2-3 hours weekdays and 6-8 hours on weekend on this map. I can't promise to include an Intro/Outro because this takes many time and it's really hard for me. Out of this reason only include an Intro/Outro if there's enough time.

I'll post an update with screenshots minimum once a week. Feel free to submit your opinions to these updates. Also you can post ideas for special effect/features.

Here're the first screenshots. They show the environment (hills, paths...) and the heightmap.

The map WITHOUT Haze/Fog. Of course there'll be Haze/Fog in the final map.
INFO: The heightmap I "exported" from Google. Unoptimized on this screen.

The following screenshots showing the map WITH Haze/Fog. How intense the Haze/Fog will be in the final map, I decide on the end of the creating process.
INFO: On the first screen you can see the course of the paths. I also drafted some buildings on the texture. The second screen shows the impressive ToD (in my opinion).

At this moment I'm satisfied with the ToD setting (it took me about one hour for creating it). Looks really atmospheric as I think.

PS: If you think "Yet another project which won't be finsihed...", it can be said that I finish all project which I start.
